Irish Tennis Intervarsity 2009 | Results/Fixtures/Stats | NI Singles Intervarsity 2008 | Cork 2008

Introduction

Welcome to the Irish Tennis Intervarsity 2009. This years intervarsity will be held in Belfast from 24th to 28th March 2009. We are gonna try some new things with this years tournament so watch this space as there will be an updates & a logo coming very soon…

The Intervarsity competition happens each year between Irish Universities and is considered by all instutions as the pinnacle of the tennis year. Queen’s have had mixed fortunes over the years, and we hosted a very successful tourament in 2005 which won the CUSAI Inter-varsity of the year award. The standard of tennis can be quite high with members of previous winners of the trophy representing Ireland at Davis Cup level. Aside from the tennis, it’s a great holiday of fun away with the club, and you get to make new connections with people at other universities.

Intervarsity Report

The report sent to CUSAI has been posted here if you want to read it. Also check out the photo’s on bebo. (<---photos coming soon)

Varsity Updates

We finally have a logo to put as a face for the tournament, and you can see a blue version of it at the top of this page.

We have also taken huge steps forward in finalising our social programme for the week. Our social chair, Naomi Hughes has aimed to be innovative, so to wet your taste buds a little, we have plans ranging from the inflatable to the Islands of Iberia!

In other news, we have managed to secure a secondary venue for matches in Ballynafeigh Tennis Club, so our extended gratitude goes out to them. Keep an eye out for more news here, for there are some things pending to be announced! Looking forward to seeing everyone up here!

Please Confirm Availability

It has come to our very recent attention that the current dates set for this years intervarsity clash with exams for a high profile team. In an effort to make sure that nobody is left out can everyone urgently forward to us your exams dates, also making mention if 10th-14th March is not suitable for your club. We can not stress the need for urgent response, as we will need to rearrange dates asap with the host Tennis Club, and would like to avoid a mess with clubs booking hotels etc. A lack of response will be considered that there is no clash for your club, or potential for a clash if we move the varsity dates forward or back up to a few weeks.

Date & Format decided

Date: Tuesday 24th - Saturday 28th March 2009
Venue: Belfast Boat Club

Format: -

We are going try an experiment this year by changing the structure to a round robin format. We are going to aim for 4 groups of 4 teams, so get your teams in early for it will be first come first served. Obviously 1sts squads will gain preference over 2nds and so on. The winners of the groups will enter the semi-finals and the runners-up go into the plate. The idea behind this is to give teams who come down value for their money rather than just getting stuffed by DCU 1sts in the first round. This way a team is likely to meet a variation of skill, and get minium of 3 matches. All the other usuals apply. i.e. 6 players per team. 6 singles and 3 doubles, first to 5 wins.

If you have any queries/disagreements about the format and date please email us at tennis@qub.ac.uk
